Examining Nurse Leader/Manager-Physician Communication Strategies: A Pilot Study

A shared goal of all health care providers is to provide safe and quality care (IOM, 1972). In order to provide this there needs to be an understanding of how the communication of that care is delivered (IPEC, 2011). After a literature review we found no existing studies that described specific communication strategies used by nurse leaders to navigate nurse-physician communication and collaboration. Therefore, in this study we sought to gain initial insight from nurse leaders about how they were able to successfully navigate effective communication and collaboration with physicians. This pilot study used a qualitative approach to generate nurse leader/manager-reported strategies, using an interview guide developed from a literature review of the nurse-physician communication and collaboration literature. A convenience sample of six nurse leaders/managers at a large, Midwestern hospital was interviewed. Five themes, teamwork, respect, being direct, building relationships and role modeling were generated from the interview responses that provide initial direction for understanding effective nurse-physician communication.University of Kansas School of Nursing. Background: Clinical practice guidelines are systematic reviews and syntheses of the scientific literature for specific diagnoses and treatment modalities. They provide important guidance to practitioners and patients. However, if a practice guideline is not updated regularly, then readers may not be aware of changes and newer developments in best practices. We identified a practice guideline that had not been updated since 2006, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Practice Parameters for Behavioral Treatment of Bedtime Problems and Night Wakings in Infants and Young Children. To determine whether the clinical trials and published research since 2006 remain consistent or conflict, we completed a systematic review. Methods: We constructed research questions based on the guideline recommendations using the Participants, Intervention, Comparator, Outcome (PICO) format, developed search strings based on these questions, and searched ClinicalTrials.gov, the World Health Organization’s International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, and PubMed. Studies were screened for eligibility and exclusion criteria based on completion date and relevance. Retained studies were evaluated based on study type and design, stage of completion, and which recommendation they addressed. Results: After the screening process, 36 studies were retained for review. Of these, 28 were completed with published results, including 19 randomized controlled trials, 8 non-randomized intervention studies, and 1 case report. The majority of studies addressed more than 1 recommendation of interest and supported the use of behavioral interventions. Conclusions: Research over the past 15 years continues to support the general effectiveness of behavioral techniques. However, published research and registered clinical studies have not aligned with research gaps that were identified in the 2006 guidelines. To further advance knowledge for clinical care of infants and young children with bedtime and night-waking problems, future research should target the previously identified research gaps as opposed to continuing to replicate well-established practices

Probing protein-DNA interactions by unzipping a single DNA double helix.

We present unzipping force analysis of protein association (UFAPA) as a novel and versatile method for detection of the position and dynamic nature of protein-DNA interactions. A single DNA double helix was unzipped in the presence of DNA-binding proteins using a feedback-enhanced optical trap. When the unzipping fork in a DNA reached a bound protein molecule we observed a dramatic increase in the tension in the DNA, followed by a sudden tension reduction. Analysis of the unzipping force throughout an unbinding "event" revealed information about the spatial location and dynamic nature of the protein-DNA complex. The capacity of UFAPA to spatially locate protein-DNA interactions is demonstrated by noncatalytic restriction mapping on a 4-kb DNA with three restriction enzymes (BsoBI, XhoI, and EcoRI). A restriction map for a given restriction enzyme was generated with an accuracy of approximately 25 bp. UFAPA also allows direct determination of the site-specific equilibrium association constant (K(A)) for a DNA-binding protein. This capability is demonstrated by measuring the cation concentration dependence of K(A) for EcoRI binding. The measured values are in good agreement with previous measurements of K(A) over an intermediate range of cation concentration. These results demonstrate the potential utility of UFAPA for future studies of site-specific protein-DNA interactions

This paper documents the experiences of a team composed of an interdisciplinary group of professors and students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in an urban resettlement between 2011 and 2013. The objectives of the University Community Project were: to promote academic growth to students while providing for local needs; to disseminate knowledge about ways to prevent foodborne illnesses and other zoonoses; and, to elaborate an educative material summarizing the educational actions in the community. A household survey was carried out, in which the residents were asked about their habits of acquisition, handling and storage of food, in addition to receiving guidance on foodborne diseases. At the same time, we sought to promote health through the dissemination of new knowledge about the acquisition, hygiene and preparation of food. We submitted the data to descriptive analysis. Throughout the period of the study, contact between students from different health courses was significant. Furthermore, we advertised the veterinarian as a participant from the sanitary control of food and the importance of the consumption of inspected food products to public health. The results were used as a theoretical basis for the development of educational and informational material, taking into account local needs
